A mentally disabled inmate in a Florida prison was locked in a scalding shower by four corrections officers. Darren Rainey was dead within two hours after being subjected to water temperatures as high as 180° and he appeared to have burns over his body with the skin slipping off in placed.
The officers were not charged and the cause of death was reported to most likely to be “cardiac arrhythmia associated with his underlying atherosclerotic heart disease … it is reasonable that these factors in combination initiated a chain of events that culminated in Rainey’s death.”
Read the followup story about what the original report omitted. He was burned to death.
