PEN Center USA has awarded John Kiriakou the prestigious First Amendment Award for 2015. Each fall at their Literary Awards Festival, PEN Center USA honors the best writing in the western United State. However, they also present four honoree awards that aren’t tied to geography and one of these awards is the First Amendment Award.
PEN Center USA has three missions:
- to stimulate and maintain interest in the written word
- to foster a vital literary culture
- to defend freedom of expression domestically ad internationally
John Kiriakou was told by PEN Center USA that they “are admirers of your bravery in the face of unspeakable adversity.” They also state that the “Board and staff of PEN Center USA have followed your story with equal parts interest and shock. The stress of what you bore witness to during your time in the CIA, and the losses you’ve suffered as a result of your disclosures, is unfathomable. You join a group of patriotic whistleblowers who have our deepest respect ad admiration.”
